Lawn after rain: how to decide if it's time to mow?

Lawn after rain: how to decide if it's time to mow?

First, check the soil. If it is soft and the wheels can leave tracks, it is better to leave the grass alone, even if the surface is dry. Mowing wet grass also often leads to an uneven result and clumped clippings.

Check different parts of the plot after rain

Short showers and several days of precipitation produce different results. In the former case, mostly the blades of grass may be damp; in the latter, the soil may be as well. Low-lying areas, heavier soil, and shaded areas are especially important. Before starting the equipment, check that you are not leaving deep footprints and that there is no standing water. A slightly dry surface can hide soft soil underneath. If ruts form during mowing, stop: continued driving usually only complicates future maintenance work.

It is worth evaluating a robot's work schedule after rain in conjunction with zone management. Not all models have the same moisture, rain, or return-to-base features, so read the manual. If one zone remains wet for a long time, first look for the cause—surface slope, drainage, or shade. A shorter schedule alone will not eliminate standing water. When conditions improve, resume mowing while observing the result: whether the clippings are being distributed, whether the wheels are slipping, and whether there is unusual motor strain.

How to apply this in practice?

Different parts of the yard dry at different rates. Shade, heavier soil, and poor drainage retain moisture for longer. Work may be suitable in one zone, while in another, it is worth waiting.

  • Check low-lying areas, shade, and dense grass patches.
  • Pay attention to wheel marks, not just the dryness of the blades.
  • Temporarily change the schedule if the lawn is not yet ready for work.
  • Address recurring moisture problems by improving site drainage.

Practical example

A sunny front lawn may be suitable for mowing, while the area behind an outbuilding may still be wet. If the model allows for separate zone planning, work can be organized according to these differences. However, do not drive through a waterlogged zone just to reach a dry one: the soil in the transit path is also important.

How many hours should you wait after rain?

There is no universal number. Waiting time varies based on the amount of precipitation, sun, wind, soil, and shade. A more reliable criterion is dry grass blades, firm soil, and the absence of deep footprints or standing water.

What is worth remembering?

A robot's water resistance does not automatically mean that you should mow a waterlogged lawn. Use the rain sensor and work pauses, and check the cutting unit according to the manufacturer's instructions.
