Damp grass sticks to the cutting deck, doesn't distribute evenly, and can remain in clumps. If the soil is waterlogged, the wheels leave ruts. Therefore, the technical ability to mow does not necessarily mean it is the right time for the lawn.
Why moisture changes the mowing result
Wet blades bend and stick together, which can cause the blade to cut them unevenly. Clippings accumulate more easily under the housing, leaving clumps on the lawn. Such work puts a strain on the equipment and makes cleaning more difficult. More importantly, consider what happens beneath the grass: the wheels can compress or rut waterlogged soil. If your boots leave deep marks, the mere fact that the rain has stopped does not yet mean the conditions are suitable. Drier grass on soft soil is also not a good combination.
There is no single waiting time suitable for all gardens. Sun, wind, soil structure, drainage, and shade all have different effects. Therefore, check several spots, including the lowest area and the lawn near dense bushes. If mowing can be postponed, it is usually a simpler solution than later leveling ruts and removing stuck-on grass. Use electric equipment only under conditions intended by the manufacturer; do not assume all battery-powered or corded mowers are equally suitable for wet environments. Always turn off the device when cleaning the cutting deck.
How to apply this practically?
After rain, check not only the grass blades but also the ground itself. If your boots sink or the lawn is slippery, postpone the work. The drying time depends on the sun, wind, soil, and shade.
- Check to see if there are still droplets on the blades and if the grass sticks to your shoes.
- Check the firmness of the soil both in the sun and in the shade.
- Postpone the work if puddles, deep footprints, or a risk of slipping are visible.
- After mowing, inspect the housing and safely remove accumulated clippings.
Practical example
After a short rain, conditions on sandy, open lawns can improve quite quickly. On the same day, a clayey area behind the house may remain waterlogged. Therefore, a neighbor's already-mowed lawn is not a reliable benchmark for your property — it is important to assess local conditions.
Can a waterproof robot mow in any weather?
No. The water resistance of the housing and good mowing conditions are separate matters. Wet soil, slippery slopes, and grass clumps remain important factors even when the equipment's electronics are protected from water.
What is worth remembering?
Follow the equipment manual and do not use it in prohibited moisture conditions. It is worth setting a rain pause for a robot and resuming work when the lawn has sufficiently dried.
