Cutting performance is not the only important factor for a slope. Reliable traction, stability, and a suitable working method are also required. Moisture, unevenness, and boundaries near the slope can increase the risk.
Assess stability together with a safe working scenario
A slope can cause problems with slipping, stability, and control. First, measure its gradient, distinguishing between percentages and degrees, and check the model's documented limit. The gradient percentage is calculated as the ratio of the rise to the horizontal distance. For example, a 20 cm rise over 1 m horizontally is 20 percent. However, the surface also determines suitability: unevenness, wet grass, and turns can change practical work. The choice of lawn mower should cover the entire route, not just one measured steepest point.
The safety requirements for hand-held, self-propelled, ride-on, and robotic equipment differ. One type of work direction or maneuvering advice cannot be automatically transferred to another. Follow the instructions of the specific device and do not try to work beyond the permitted conditions. Pay attention to the bottom of the slope, boundaries, and obstacles — near water or a sudden edge, additional protection may be required. If a safe scenario cannot be created, it is better to choose another maintenance method. A robot reduces part of the human effort, but the physical terrain hazard does not automatically disappear because of it.
How to adapt this practically?
Measure the gradient in both percentages and the units used by the manufacturer: percentages are not the same as degrees. Follow the instructions of the specific equipment, especially regarding working near edges.
- Measure the actual gradient and write down in which units it is provided.
- Check the limits of the specific model and the slope working instructions.
- Assess the surface moisture, unevenness, and space to turn around.
- Protect dangerous boundaries in the manner specified by the manufacturer or change the maintenance plan.
Practical example
There may be enough space at the top of the slope, but at the bottom, the robot may have to suddenly turn around near a tree. If the grass is wet there, the permitted gradient figure alone is not enough. The assessment of the model and the area must cover the rise, descent, turn, and safe boundary.
Can you try if the slope only slightly exceeds the specification?
Do not plan work beyond the documented limits. The specification is not an invitation to test the edge case in your yard. Contact us for an area assessment and plan another solution for the unsuitable zone.
What is worth remembering?
Do not exceed the specified limits and do not try to compensate for slipping equipment with DIY modifications. A difficult area may require a separate solution or professional assessment.
